Best Cold Plunge Tubs (2026): Plunge vs Ice Barrel vs Renu, Specs and Running Costs
Short answer: if you want one box that plugs into a wall and stays at temperature, the Plunge All-In ($7,990 on sale) is the most complete package. If you want the lowest price for a tub plus a real chiller, the Ice Barrel 500 + Chiller bundle ($5,749.98) costs about $2,240 less, sits upright in a smaller footprint, and carries a lifetime warranty on the barrel. Renu's Cold Stoic tubs cost more but publish the clearest energy numbers we found: about 120–130 W average while cooling, or roughly $16–$17 a month at the U.S. average electricity rate. Sun Home's inflatable plunge is the cheapest option here with a chiller that also heats ($3,999). All of these run on a standard 120V outlet, ideally on a dedicated 15A GFCI circuit.

Model deep dives
Plunge All-In (Gen 2)
Best for: buyers who want a single unit that's delivered inside, filled with a hose, plugged in, and controlled from a phone.
- Tub and fit: lay-down tub, 76¾" L × 31½" W × 28¾" H. Plunge says it fits people up to 6'9". 105 gallons; 238 lb empty, 1,150 lb full.
- Chiller: integrated 0.75 HP, cools to 37°F. Plunge rates it to hold 37°F in 120°F ambient air and lists a cooling rate of 10–12°F per hour. Optional heater (+$500) adds 4–5°F per hour of heating.
- Water care: onboard ozone plus filtration; Plunge says the pump turns over the full water volume every 15 minutes. Supports chlorine and non-chlorine routines.
- Electrical: dedicated 120V, 15A circuit. Built-in 7 ft cord with a GFCI plug.
- Clearances: 16" on the fan side, 12" at the front for drain access, 4" on the left side.
- Included: insulated spa cover, 6-month starter maintenance kit, carbon hose filter, skimmer net, phone holder.
- Delivery: free in-home delivery (first floor, packaging removed) in most "In Area" zones, typically within about 35 miles of a major airport hub; flat-rate fee outside those zones. In-stock units ship within 8 business days.
- Warranty and returns: 1-year warranty; 30-day return policy (conditions apply). Residential use only.
Trade-offs: the shortest warranty among the built-in tubs here, and the biggest footprint. At 1,150 lb full, check floor loading before putting it on an upper-floor deck.
Other Plunge options, if the All-In is more than you need: The Plunge (original acrylic lay-down tub with the Pro Chiller, $8,490 cold-only) and Plunge Air (inflatable tub with the Pro Chiller, $5,490 cold-only). Plunge rates the Pro Chiller to 37°F.

Ice Barrel 500 + Chiller
Best for: buyers who want a seated, upright plunge in a small footprint and a lower price than the all-in-one tubs.
- Barrel: 57.6" L × 30.7" W × 42.1" H, built-in steps and an interior seat. Ice Barrel says it fits users up to 6'9". 94 gallons (356 L); about 104 lb empty and roughly 900 lb full.

- Chiller: separate ½ HP unit, cools to 37°F, rated for ambient temperatures up to 120°F. Wi-Fi app control, 7" color display, R290 refrigerant, Ice Barrel lists it at under 55 dB. 18.63" × 16.40" × 20.40", 65 lb.
- Electrical: ~115V, 60Hz, 15A maximum overcurrent protection (MOP).
- Connections: chiller ports are ¾" NPT. The drain spout needs assembly and connects to a garden hose.
- Warranty: limited lifetime on the barrel (material defects, with reasonable maintenance); 1 year on the chiller. 30-day return policy.
- Shipping: barrel ships in 2–3 business days ($300 to the contiguous U.S. per the barrel page); chiller ships in 5–7 days.
Trade-offs: it's a two-piece setup with hoses between barrel and chiller, and the chiller is cold-only. Ice Barrel doesn't publish average power draw, so running cost is an estimate (see electricity cost).

Ice Barrel 300
Best for: buyers who want to start with ice, or live somewhere cold, and add a chiller later.

- Capacity and weight: 77 gallons (292 L); 61 lb empty, 700 lb full.
- Insulation and ports: fully insulated barrel and lid, with built-in ¾" NPT chiller ports.
- Warranty: limited lifetime. Made in the USA.
- Upgrade path: the Ice Barrel 300 + Chiller bundle is $5,149.98; the chiller alone is $3,999.99.
Trade-offs: without a chiller you're buying and hauling ice, and water temperature drifts with the weather.

Renu Therapy Cold Stoic 2.0 and 3.0
Best for: buyers who want a furniture-style tub with a wood or composite deck, a 5-year warranty, and published energy figures.
- Shared body: 70" L × 33" W × 35" H (about 35.5" at the widest point); water area 40" L × 25" W × 31" D. About 365 lb dry and about 1,155 lb filled with 95 gallons. 4" of foam insulation. Handcrafted in Southern California.
- Cold Stoic 2.0 ($9,499): cold-only, down to 39°F, 0.25 HP chiller, built-in thermostat controls, standard filtration plus ozone. Renu lists 450 W / 3.8 A peak and 120 W average over 24 hours. 6 ft cord. Standard 120V, 15A.
- Cold Stoic 3.0 ($11,399): 37–104°F, 0.5 HP chiller with heater, touchscreen and Wi-Fi app, dual-stage filtration plus ozone, programmable lighting. Cooling 518 W / 6.1 A peak and 130 W average; heating 1,013 W / 8.6 A peak and 260 W average. 12 ft cord with GFCI plug. Renu calls for a dedicated 120V/15A circuit. Insulated spa cover is a $400 option. Showed "sold out" with a 3–5 week ship estimate on Oct 11.
- Noise: 58 dB at about 3 feet from the large grill.
- Clearances: 27" minimum at the large vent (mechanical bay access for filters, water changes and service) and 15" at the small vent.
- Delivery: free curbside delivery in the contiguous U.S.; moving the tub off the pallet to its final spot is on you.
- Warranty: 5-year limited on both.
Trade-offs: the most expensive tubs here, and the 2.0's 0.25 HP chiller is the smallest in this group, so expect slower pull-down after a refill.

Sun Home Cold Plunge (Horizontal and Vertical)
Best for: renters, movers, and anyone who wants cold and warm water from one chiller at the lowest price here.
- Tubs: puncture-resistant inflatable. Horizontal: 77.2" L × 27.6" W × 24.4" H outside, 69.3" × 19.7" × 24.4" deep inside, 128 gallons. Vertical: 35.4" each way, 106 gallons, $3,799 on sale.
- Chiller: standalone Smart-Chiller, which Sun Home lists as 1 HP; cools to 32°F and heats to 104°F. Ozone injection, app and LED touchscreen control. 21.2" × 15.7" × 21.7", 88 lb. 55–60 dB per Sun Home.
- Electrical: 110–120V, 11A, standard NEMA 5-15 plug, on a dedicated 15A GFCI circuit.
- Placement limits: Sun Home says the chiller needs ambient air above 40°F to run and should sit at least 5 feet from other appliances. Let the chiller stand upright, unplugged, for 4 hours before first use.
- Included: tub, cover, carrying case, chiller, air pump, repair kit, filter wrench, spare filter, hoses.
- Warranty: "1+ year" per the product page.
Trade-offs: an inflatable tub won't feel or last like a rigid one, the warranty terms are vague on the product page, and the 40°F minimum ambient limits winter use outdoors in cold climates.

Cold plunge electricity cost
Monthly cost = average watts × 24 hours × 30.4 days ÷ 1,000 × your electricity rate. We use the U.S. average residential price of 18.31¢/kWh (EIA, July 2026). Your utility bill shows your actual rate.
| Scenario | Avg. draw | kWh / month | Cost / month at 18.31¢ | At 33.61¢ (California avg.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renu Cold Stoic 2.0, cooling (Renu's published average) | 120 W | ~88 | ~$16 | ~$29 |
| Renu Cold Stoic 3.0, cooling (Renu's published average) | 130 W | ~95 | ~$17 | ~$32 |

| Illustration: a ~500 W chiller running 8 h/day | ~167 W | ~122 | ~$22 | ~$41 |
| Illustration: a ~500 W chiller running 12 h/day | ~250 W | ~182 | ~$33 | ~$61 |
Renu figures come from Renu's specifications page. Plunge, Ice Barrel and Sun Home don't publish average consumption, so the "illustration" rows show how run time changes the bill; they are not measurements of those products. Heating mode costs more: Renu lists 260 W average for the Cold Stoic 3.0 when heating.
What raises run time: hot or sunny locations, leaving the lid off, frequent use, a low set temperature, and refilling with warm water. What lowers it: shade, an insulated cover, a well-insulated tub, and a set point a few degrees warmer than the minimum. If you use ice instead of a chiller, the running cost is the ice itself, which adds up quickly for daily use.
Placement, power and drainage
- Floor load: filled weights run about 700 lb (Ice Barrel 300) to 1,155 lb (Renu) on a small footprint. Ground-level slabs and pavers are simplest; ask a contractor before using an elevated deck or upper floor.
- Circuit: every model here uses a standard 120V plug. Plunge, Renu (3.0) and Sun Home call for a dedicated 15A circuit; Plunge and Sun Home specify GFCI protection, and Renu's cords include a GFCI plug. Avoid extension cords. If you need a new circuit, use a licensed electrician.
- Clearances: chillers need airflow. Plunge lists 16" on the fan side; Renu lists 27" and 15" at its two vents; Sun Home wants 5 feet from other appliances.
- Ambient limits: Plunge and Ice Barrel rate their chillers for ambient air up to 120°F; Sun Home's chiller needs air above 40°F.
- Drainage: plan where 77–128 gallons goes at every water change. Ice Barrel's drain spout takes a garden hose; Plunge and Renu need front or vent-side access to their drains.
- Delivery path: Ice Barrel barrels fit through 31" doors. Plunge delivers in-home to the first floor in most metro zones; Renu delivers curbside on a pallet.
Filtration and water care
- Plunge: ozone plus filtration; Plunge sells 6-month non-chlorine kits ($153) and 3-month chlorine kits ($100) for the All-In.
- Ice Barrel: change water about every four weeks or as preferred; Ice Barrel sells a Water Stabilizer ($59.99) and a maintenance kit ($179.99). Chiller filters are sold in 3-packs.
- Renu: standard (2.0) or dual-stage (3.0) filtration plus ozone. Quarterly maintenance package for the 2.0 is $85.
- Sun Home: paper filter and hair filter at the chiller, ozone injection.
Plunge maintenance kits Ice Barrel maintenance kit
Total cost checklist
- Tub and chiller: $3,999 (Sun Home) to $11,399 (Renu 3.0); $1,149.99 for an Ice Barrel 300 without a chiller.
- Delivery: free in-home (Plunge, most zones), free curbside (Renu), $300 listed for the Ice Barrel 500.
- Electrical: a new dedicated 120V/15A GFCI circuit if you don't have one near the spot.
- Base: a level pad or pavers outdoors.
- Cover: included with Plunge; $400 option on the Renu 3.0.
- Water care: about $85–$180 per kit, depending on brand and interval.
- Electricity: roughly $11–$33 a month at the U.S. average rate, more in hot climates or at high rates.
FAQ
Can a cold plunge run on a regular outlet?
Yes. Every model here uses a standard 120V plug. Plunge, Renu (Cold Stoic 3.0) and Sun Home want it on a dedicated 15A circuit with GFCI protection, meaning nothing else runs on that breaker.
How much does it cost to run a cold plunge each month?
Using Renu's published averages, about $16–$17 a month at the U.S. average rate of 18.31¢/kWh. Other brands don't publish averages; a ~500 W chiller running 4 to 12 hours a day works out to about $11–$33 a month.
Plunge or Ice Barrel?
Plunge All-In for a lay-down tub, optional heat and in-home delivery. Ice Barrel 500 + Chiller for about $2,240 less, an upright seat, a smaller footprint and a lifetime barrel warranty.
Ice Barrel or Renu?
Ice Barrel if price and footprint matter most. Renu if you want an integrated lay-down tub with a furniture-style deck and a 5-year warranty on the whole unit.
Do I need a chiller?
Not to start. Ice Barrel's barrels work with ice, and they have chiller ports so you can add one later. A chiller removes the need to buy and carry ice and holds a set temperature.
Can I keep a cold plunge outside in winter?
It depends on the chiller. Sun Home's needs ambient air above 40°F. Check each manufacturer's winterizing instructions before freezing weather.
Will a cold plunge fit through my door?
Ice Barrel says its barrels fit through standard 31" doors. Measure doorways, halls and turns against the exterior dimensions in the table before ordering a rigid tub.
How often do I change the water?
Ice Barrel suggests about every four weeks. Tubs with ozone and filtration can go longer if you follow the maker's water-care routine.
